the official name of the entity formed by the union of Upper and Lower Canada from 1841 to 1867, the two parts being known officially as Canada West and Canada East respectively.

Upon, from and after, the 10th day of this present month of February, the Provinces of Upper Canada and Lower Canada shall form and be one Province, under the name of the Province of Canada.
1948
Durham also recommended that Upper and Lower Canada be merged into a single "Province of Canada." This was done by the Act of Union of 1840, which provided one government for "Canada East" and " Canada West," as they came to be known, with each of the old provinces electing an equal number of members to the assembly.
